What does DELE mean?

What does the DELE C1 certify?

The DELE C1 certifies that the candidate is capable of:

• Expressing themselves fluently and spontaneously without very obvious signs of effort to find the appropriate expression.
• Making flexible and effective use of the language for social, academic, and professional purposes.
• Producing clear, well-structured, and detailed texts on topics of some complexity, showing correct use of the mechanisms of organization, articulation, and cohesion of the text.

Who issues the DELE C1?

The diploma is awarded by the Instituto Cervantes, the public institution created by Spain for the promotion and teaching of the Spanish language and the dissemination of Hispanic culture. The Instituto Cervantes acts on behalf of the Ministry of Education of the Government of Spain.

CEFR Level: what does C1 mean?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) establishes a scale of six levels ranging from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). The C1 level is situated on the penultimate rung and is referred to as “effective operational proficiency” or “competent user”.

A C1 level speaker differs from a B2 level speaker in that they can handle more complex texts, grasp nuances and implicit meanings, and express themselves with greater precision and naturalness in both formal and informal registers.

What is the DELE C1 used for?

Obtaining Spanish nationality

Since 2015, citizens of non-Spanish-speaking countries applying for Spanish nationality must certify a minimum level of A2 in Spanish. However, many candidates choose to present a DELE C1 as proof of advanced linguistic integration, which can strengthen their application.

Access to universities

Most Spanish and Latin American universities require a B2 or C1 level for admitting foreign students into undergraduate and graduate programs. The DELE C1 is accepted as proof of level in practically all higher education institutions in the Spanish-speaking world.

Does the DELE C1 expire?

No, the DELE C1 does not expire. Unlike other language certificates such as the TOEFL or IELTS, which have a limited validity (generally two years), DELE diplomas have indefinite validity. Once you obtain your DELE C1, it is yours forever.

This makes the DELE a long-term investment: you pass once and have a lifetime valid certificate that you can present at any time to certify your level.

International recognition

Structure of the DELE C1 exam

The DELE C1 exam consists of 4 tests organized into 2 groups:

• Group 1: Reading comprehension and language use (90 min, 5 tasks, 40 items) + Listening comprehension and language use (50 min, 5 tasks, 30 items)
• Group 2: Integrated skills — Listening comprehension and written expression and interaction (80 min, 2 tasks) + Reading comprehension and oral expression and interaction (20 min preparation + 20 min exam, 3 tasks)

The maximum score is 100 points (50 per group). To pass, you need a minimum of 30 points in each group.
